The competition in sports can be extremely intense at times. The pressure in the field can be enormous, especially with the number of competing teams increasing with every passing day. Performing well under high-pressure circumstances is not easy. As per Stacy Danley, all sports teams need strong leaders to survive and perform well. Good leaders keep a team motivated, and strive to maintain a winning team culture.

Coaches usually use the training ground and pre-and-post-match team talks in order to display their leadership. However, once the players are out on the field, things are generally down to the captain. Team leaders or captains are responsible for implementing the vision and strategies of the coach on the match day. Captains and coaches would obviously be the first place to look for leadership, but they are not the only ones to take the bull by the horns on the field. In fact, leadership may come from any team member. By developing the right skills, one would be able to lift their team from potential defeat to dramatic victory.

People need to keep their individual roles within the team in mind, and pay heed to the following aspects to display true leadership.

  • Awareness: Awareness is critical for any team leader. While there is no absolute method to leadership, the approach of a team captain or coach is usually influenced by external factors. Awareness is likely to come through the time spent on building relationships with the team mates, peers and players.  Good captains know how their team members react to certain styles and tones. While some teams need an arm around their shoulder to get motivated after a serious defeat, others require a few strong words. Diverse players tend to react differently to distinctive types of leadership.
  • Passionate:  Sports teams are intrinsically passionate. Team players get to experience the same set of emotions out on the pitch every weekend, right from disappointment in defeat and euphoria in victory. Team leaders are the ones to embody the positive side of emotions, like commitment, dedication and passion, which drive the team towards their goal.
  • Set an example: Players are likely to follow the team leader and authority figure down any behavioural path they decide to follow. For the good of the team, it is important for captains to head down the right path. If a captain is seen with their head down, ranting at the opposing players, or just conducting themselves in a negative manner in general, then it would have a negative influence on their own team as well. The best leaders are the ones who work the hardest on the field, and are even respectful towards the competitors. This approach is not only important for game days but also for training days and off the field commitments.

As per Stacy Danley, if the team captain has a less than enthusiastic attitude to training or turns up late in the field, it can give the rest of the team a reason to take their eye off the ball.  Team captains should always try to set a good example for the other players, so that the other players can feed off their enthusiasm and positivity.
